Zaptec wanted to enhance their app, which serves both electric vehicle (EV) charger installers and end-users, by adding more smart features like Eco Mode and access management. The main challenge was to introduce these functionalities without complicating the user experience. Additionally, Zaptec was undergoing an organizational shift towards the SAFe framework, which required the development team to adapt to a new, more collaborative structure while maintaining high standards in app performance and reliability.

Olavstoppen, along with Bouvet, formed a cross-functional app team, working in an agile manner to maintain and evolve Zaptec's native Android and iOS apps. They ensured seamless communication between the app and Zaptec’s hardware through shared Kotlin Multiplatform libraries, which handled crucial features like Bluetooth communication. The team also integrated Zaptec’s design system across both platforms, maintained a clean architecture with modern development frameworks (Kotlin, Jetpack Compose for Android, SwiftUI for iOS), and implemented robust unit and end-to-end testing for high reliability. To support Zaptec's reorganization, the team adapted to the SAFe framework, splitting into two cross-functional teams to ensure efficient feature development.

The app now supports a growing number of smart features while retaining its core functionality: making EV charging easy and hassle-free for users. The seamless integration of new functionalities contributed to the app now serving over 100,000 monthly iOS users and 44,000 Android users. This agile collaboration allowed Zaptec to maintain high standards in app performance, keeping the app as a vital touchpoint in Zaptec's customer experience. Working with cross-functional teams also ensured that Zaptec could scale efficiently with their SAFe-driven organizational goals.
